Stop comparing price tags. Start comparing total cost of ownership—because the $320 pressure transmitter that fails after eight months is not cheaper than the $480 one that runs for five years. I learned this the hard way, and it cost me and my company more than just the reorder price.

Let me give you some context before you think I'm just another cost consultant. I'm the procurement manager at a 180-person industrial maintenance company. ASME B40.100 defines accuracy grades for pressure gauges, from high-grade instruments that hold a tight tolerance to lower grades for general indication. The difference isn't academic.
